One of the first questions visitors arriving in Istanbul by plane ask is how to get from the airport to the city centre. The city has two major airports, and there is more than one way to reach Taksim from each of them. In this guide we look at the options airport by airport and explain which method suits which situation. As timetables, routes and fares change from time to time, we recommend checking the current information of the operators concerned before you set off.
First, know which airport you are landing at
Istanbul's two main airports are on different sides of the city. Istanbul Airport is in the north of the European side, while Sabiha Gokcen Airport is on the Asian side, in Pendik. Since Taksim is on the European side, the journeys from the two airports follow different routes. Check the airport code on your ticket: Istanbul Airport is shown as IST and Sabiha Gokcen as SAW.
From Istanbul Airport to Taksim
Airport bus
The Taksim line of the Havaist buses provides a direct connection between the airport and Taksim. Not needing to change is an important advantage for passengers with luggage. Journey time varies with traffic; allow for this, especially in the evening.
Metro
The M11 metro line connects Istanbul Airport with Gayrettepe. At Gayrettepe you can change to the M2 line and get off at Taksim station. Not being affected by traffic makes the metro a predictable option, but remember that you will need to walk with your luggage when changing. You can pay with an Istanbulkart.
Taxi
You can take a taxi from the official taxi ranks at the airport exit. Make sure the journey is on the meter. The fare varies with traffic and the route taken.
From Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Taksim
Airport bus
Havabus's line between Sabiha Gokcen and Taksim offers a direct connection from the Asian side to Taksim. As bridge traffic directly affects the journey time, it can take longer at busy times.
Metro, Marmaray and ferry
The M4 metro line connects Sabiha Gokcen Airport with Kadikoy. There are two practical options for reaching Taksim by public transport:
- Via Marmaray: On the M4 line, change to Marmaray at Ayrilik Cesmesi and travel to Yenikapi, then take the M2 metro from Yenikapi to Taksim.
- Via ferry: Take the M4 to Kadikoy, cross to Karakoy by ferry and from Karakoy ride the historic Tunel funicular up to the Tunel end of Istiklal Avenue. This route makes a lovely welcome for those seeing the Bosphorus for the first time.
Taxi
A taxi from Sabiha Gokcen to Taksim means crossing the Bosphorus. Because of bridge crossings and traffic, the time and fare can vary.
Private transfer: the most effortless option
If you are landing late at night or travelling with children or lots of luggage, a pre-arranged transfer is the most comfortable option. Your driver meets you at the exit and drops you right at your hotel's door. Our hotel offers a transfer service between the airport and the hotel; simply send us your flight details when booking or through the phone, WhatsApp or e-mail channels on our contact page.
Tips to make the journey easier
- Istanbulkart: If you will use public transport, you can get the card from sales points or vending machines at the airports. The same card works on the metro, Marmaray, buses, funiculars and ferries.
- Mobile internet: Make sure your internet connection works right after landing so you can plan your route and contact your transfer driver.
- Rush hours: Both road traffic and public transport get busier during the morning and evening rush hours; if possible, travel outside these times.
- Hotel address: Save the hotel's address in Turkish on your phone; showing it to the taxi driver makes communication easier.
Which option suits you?
- If budget is your priority and you have little luggage: the metro and other public transport links.
- If you do not want to change: the airport buses.
- If you want comfort and predictability: a pre-arranged transfer.
- If you land late at night: a transfer or a taxi.
When you arrive in Taksim
When you arrive in Taksim by metro or bus, the square is a natural meeting point for reaching your hotel. Our hotel is near the square, in the Sehit Muhtar quarter. You can find the transport links nearby in the nearby places section of our home page and accommodation options on our rooms page.
Taksim metro station has several exits opening onto the square; follow the signs inside the station to reach the square easily. The airport buses drop passengers at their stops in Taksim. If you have a lot of luggage or arrive late at night, a short taxi ride from the square to the hotel or a pre-arranged transfer makes things easier.
Conclusion
From both airports there are different ways to reach Taksim depending on your budget, time and expectations of comfort. Checking the service information before you set off, and arranging a transfer in advance especially for late arrivals, will help you spend your first hours in Istanbul comfortably.
